Take people at arm's length. There's a reason why there's a phrase saying it doesn't pay to be kind. Once you're too kind, you care too much and get too involved. But people don't even need it. It seems like they really do sometimes but there are so many people in every person's life. Doesn't mean you care means the person will change. Whatever's old gets discarded, whatever's new comes with novelty. So they say beauty is but skin deep, you must be foolish to believe that. Who are we trying to kid? It's everything today, because one thing leads to another, and first impressions are the most stubborn stains.
You are of no use, and people need to fall alone, and only then will they get what you are trying to bring across to their clouded minds, trying so hard to be able to cushion their fall.
